Lien is a legal claim against a home or any other property. It’s typically used by the suppliers or subcontractors when they don’t get the payment for any of the renovations/improvements they did on the property. Liens is a way to seek payments in such circumstances. You can even experience the issue of liens if you are not the one who’s responsible for missing the payment. For example, suppose you got your kitchen renovated and the general contractor didn’t pay the supplier for the materials used. In that case, the supplier is most likely to place a lien against your property to recover the money. You, as an owner, are responsible for all such payments when suppliers, sub-contractors, or labor is not paid.
Liens can work best for due payments, but sometimes they create issues that are difficult and expensive to resolve, causing a project delay. Timely management and resolution of liens are important to keep the projects going and avoid additional costs. At Tompkins Law, I help clients facing the issue of liens so they can focus on the project and stop worrying about liens.
